EVIDE TRAER & EVIDE INDEX

Reconstructing AI agent rule transitions, and stating how evidentially supportable the reconstruction is

Experimental construct. The results on this page come from two controlled A/B runs executed end to end on the operational EVIDE Governance Lab, using exclusively synthetic data and the frozen EVIDE TRAER 0.3.2 engine. This is not a forensic certification, not evidence of real-world agent conduct, and not a legal finding. Independent human review and independent confirmation of the 0.3.2 engine are still open.
EVIDE TRAER β€” Transition Reconstruction & Evidentiary Reading (the engine). EVIDE INDEX β€” Transition Evidentiary Index (the evaluation component). They are two distinct functions: one reconstructs, the other states how supportable the reconstruction is.

1. What TRAER and INDEX Are

The lifecycle of a governance rule assigned to an AI agent spans several declared phases β€” issuance, declared effectiveness, reception, loading, application, and, for a revocation, the issuance and declared effectiveness of a new version. These phases are typically recorded by different parties, on different clocks that are not known to be synchronized. Reading such records naively invites a specific error: treating a declared action timestamp that falls after a declared revocation timestamp as evidence of a violation.

EVIDE TRAER and EVIDE INDEX address this by separating two things that are easy to conflate β€” reconstructing a declared sequence, and demonstrating the operational sequence that actually occurred.

EVIDE TRAER reconstructs what the available evidence permits to be reconstructed.
EVIDE INDEX assesses how evidentially supportable that reconstruction is.
Reconstructing a declared sequence is not the same as proving it happened. The system labels, rather than hides, every point at which a conclusion rests on a declaration instead of a verification.
Section 2
2. The Evidentiary Problem

Two difficulties recur whenever agent rule transitions are reconstructed after the fact. First, a phase may simply have no declared evidence β€” which is not the same as the phase not having occurred. Second, timestamps declared on uncorrelated clocks cannot, by themselves, establish an operational order between events, and an apparent order carries no finding of legitimacy or violation.

A method that is useful for forensic and governance purposes must therefore reconstruct what the evidence permits, state the limits of that reconstruction, and refuse to convert absences into negative findings or declared orders into violations.

This is the same discipline that runs through the rest of EVIDE: preserve and reconstruct what was declared, and keep "declared" strictly separate from "verified". TRAER and INDEX apply it to the specific case of an AI agent's rule transitions over time.
Section 3
3. EVIDE TRAER β€” Transition Reconstruction

EVIDE TRAER reconstructs, from the declared evidence in a bundle, the phases of a rule transition and their relationships:

  • the phases of the transition and their status β€” evidenced or not_declared;
  • the sources and declarants of each phase;
  • order relations between events, each carried with its clock basis β€” and, where two clocks are not related in the bundle, marked not_determinable_across_clocks;
  • flags for incomplete observation (e.g. "change not fully observed").

TRAER imposes no operational restriction and does not verify that a rule was actually applied. It is a reconstruction of the declared record, not a controller and not an oracle of what really happened.

Off-server by construction. The engine runs on the operator's workstation, never inside the Lab. The Lab stores the exact bytes of each deposited bundle, computes their SHA-256 itself, and applies a sequence of gates on deposit and on import β€” but it does not run the engine (see Section 7).
Section 4
4. EVIDE INDEX β€” Evidentiary Reconstructability

EVIDE INDEX assesses how evidentially supportable the TRAER reconstruction is. Each evaluation returns a categorical state, the decisive rule behind it, all concurrent conditions, and a full perimeter statement of what the state does and does not cover.

reconstructable
The declared evidence supports reconstructing the transition and its phases.
partially_reconstructable
Some phases are evidenced while at least one expected (phase, subject) is not β€” the state observed in both runs of the experiment below.
unverifiable
The declared evidence does not permit a supportable reconstruction.
unknown
Insufficient declared evidence to place the reconstruction at all.
inconsistent
The declared evidence contains an internal contradiction.

As stated in every evaluation it produces, EVIDE INDEX is explicitly not:

  • a safety score;
  • a certification of compliance;
  • a verification of the authority of the issuer;
  • a proof that the declared events actually happened;
  • an assessment of responsibility.
These non-claims are not editorial caveats added for this page: they are printed by the engine inside each assessment and reproduced in every Lab evaluation view.
Section 5
5. The Controlled A/B Experiment

The construct was exercised with a single controlled A/B experiment on the operational Governance Lab, using synthetic data only. The governed unit is one rule, rule:R-1, with two versions: @1 (the previous version, in force) and @2 (the new, revoking version β€” @2 supersedes @1). Two synthetic subjects declare evidence β€” an issuer registry on clock clk:issuer, and an agent runtime on clock clk:agent.

Nine declared evidence items describe issuance, declared effectiveness, reception, loading, and one action under the previous version (e07_action_under_v1). The scenario contains a deliberate gap: the application of the new version @2 by the agent runtime is never declared β€” application / agent_rt = not_declared. The experiment turns on that missing element.

Only one intended variable differs between the two bundles: the declared relationship between the two clocks.
Variant A β€” clocks not related
No relationship between clk:issuer and clk:agent is declared. Every cross-clock order resolves to not_determinable_across_clocks: "clocks not related in the bundle, no order is determinable between them."
Variant B β€” declared clock relation
The bundle declares the two clocks as the same time source β€” "declared for the experiment only, not verified." Cross-clock orders become derivable as before / after, each annotated by the engine as declared, not verified.
The two bundles share the same nine evidence items and the same declared timestamps. They also differ in two incidental, non-semantic label fields (a bundle id and a free-text description); these do not enter the engine's reconstruction logic or the INDEX rules. Their non-effect was reasoned from inspection of the inputs and the engine, not isolated by a dedicated ablation run.
Section 6
6. The Central Result

Adding an explicitly declared relationship between two otherwise-unrelated clocks changed which temporal orderings the engine could derive β€” but it did not change the INDEX state, and it did not close the evidentiary gap.

Figure 1 β€” Declared Clock Relationships: What Changes, What Remains Unverified. A/B comparison of the two runs on the same declared evidence (selected events; full nine-item set in the Working Paper). In variant_A all cross-clock orderings are not_determinable_across_clocks; in variant_B a declared same_clock relation makes orderings derivable (before / after), each labelled "declared, not verified". The EVIDE INDEX state is partially_reconstructable (rule T-07) in both, and the application of the new version @2 by agent_rt remains not_declared. Key point: a declared clock relation changes the derivable ordering but does not change the INDEX state in these two runs; "after" does not imply a violation. Synthetic data only.

The ordering e07_action_under_v1 after e06_eff_v2 in variant_B deserves particular care, because it is exactly the result a naive reader would over-interpret. On the observed record: the ordering exists only because the clock relationship was declared in the bundle; that relationship was not independently verified; after does not demonstrate a violation; the actual application of @2 is not demonstrated (the phase is not_declared, and absence of evidence is not evidence of absence); and no responsibility can be attributed on the basis of these results alone.

A declared relation produced orderings.
It did not produce verification, and it did not remove the gaps that determine the INDEX state.
Section 7
7. Integrity Verification vs Evaluation Reproduction

Each Lab evaluation record keeps two levels strictly apart, under the heading "Evidentiary status asserted by the Lab":

Asserted statusMeaning (as recorded by the Lab)
import_integrity_verifiedyes β€” the stored snapshot and assessment bytes match their recorded digests and bind to the stored bundle and to an approved evaluator (gate G-6). A check of integrity and provenance, not of the evaluation itself.
evaluation_reproducedno β€” the Lab does not run the engine. A reproduced verdict, if any, was produced by the operator on the workstation and is recorded as declared, not independently verified.
The terms certified, independently validated, legally proven and court-admissible are deliberately not used anywhere to describe these results. The operator-side digest recomputation performed during the experiment is an integrity check, not an independent third-party reproduction.
Section 8
8. What TRAER and INDEX Do Not Claim
  • They do not prove that the declared events actually happened β€” only that the evidence declares them.
  • They do not verify the authority of the issuer, nor that any party was entitled to issue or revoke the rule.
  • They do not treat a declared temporal order as a verified operational order: a declared clock relation is not verified synchronization.
  • They do not read after as a violation, nor not_declared as proof that a phase did not occur β€” absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
  • They do not attribute responsibility or establish fault.
  • They do not enforce, apply, block or authorize any agent operation.
  • They do not infer, complete or interpret declarations that do not exist.
EVIDE reconstructs and evaluates what was declared.
It keeps "declared" and "verified" strictly apart,
and states where a conclusion rests on a declaration.
Section 9
9. Position within the EVIDE Ecosystem

TRAER + INDEX answer a question the other EVIDE constructs do not: given the declared evidence, can an agent's rule transition be reconstructed, and how supportable is that reconstruction?

ConstructCoversAnswers
FEDISIntegrity & chain of custodyIs the preserved copy identical to what was acquired, and is its custody traceable over time? β€” integrity of the acquired copy, not a proof of the original content's authenticity.
DAPIDeclared identityWho is declared as the subject or authority asserting this fact? β€” the asserted identity, not a proof of legal authority.
GLMDeclared governanceWhat rules does the ecosystem publicly declare for itself? β€” high-level, declared, not enforced.
ANCHORDeclared perimetersWithin which boundary was the agent declared authorized to operate at that moment? β€” preserved as declared, not proven to have been applied.
TRAER + INDEXRule transitions (experimental)Can the declared transition of an agent rule over time be reconstructed, and how evidentially supportable is that reconstruction? β€” reconstruction of declarations, not proof of operational conduct.
ANCHOR preserves declared operational perimeters and their subsequent declared changes. TRAER + INDEX reconstruct rule-transition phases across time and assess the evidentiary supportability of that reconstruction. They are complementary, not interchangeable.
Section 10
10. Status, Limits and Reproducibility

TRAER + INDEX are implemented as an isolated, experimental Governance Lab profile (v_traer_index_01): its own tables, no existing Lab file modified, no public endpoint. The profile is disabled by default; it was explicitly enabled by the authorized operator for the controlled synthetic experiment and remained enabled afterward, without authorization for non-synthetic participation. The evaluation engine is EVIDE TRAER 0.3.2, frozen, run off-server.

The results are bounded in explicit ways:

  • data are entirely synthetic; running on the operational Lab does not make them real observations of an agent;
  • only two controlled variants were run, one execution each β€” no statistical replication, no generalization claimed;
  • no independent observation of an agent; the clock relation in variant_B is declared and not verified;
  • no finding of compliance or violation; none can be derived from these results;
  • independent human review of the profile and independent confirmation of the frozen 0.3.2 engine remain open;
  • no competitive benchmark was executed; no claim of superiority over any other system is made.

The retained artifacts are intended to support independent reproduction using the frozen 0.3.2 engine: a third party holding the frozen package can recompute the bundle digest, regenerate the snapshot and assessment, and obtain the reproduced verdict, with re-import accepted only if the provenance gate binds the artifacts to the stored bundle and the approved evaluator. Independent third-party reproduction has not yet been demonstrated. The full artifact manifest, with SHA-256 digests, is published in the Working Paper.

Future direction (not implemented, not authorized for development): a feasibility study on how an AI agent could submit a TRAER evidence bundle through the EVIDE MCP Server to an authorized Lab intake mechanism β€” preserving exact-byte integrity, SHA-256 verification, agent/session/run attribution, and the separation between agent-declared content and Lab-verified acquisition facts. The isolated experimental profile is not exposed through any public endpoint.

EVIDE TRAER & EVIDE INDEX

EVIDE TRAER reconstructs what the evidence permits.
EVIDE INDEX states how evidentially supportable that reconstruction is.
Every order that rests on a declaration is labelled declared, not verified.

Experimental research output based exclusively on synthetic data. Not a forensic certification, not evidence of real-world agent conduct, and not a legal finding.

"A declared clock relation changes which orderings can be derived.
It does not verify the relation, establish a violation,
or close the missing application-phase evidence."
